The TrailWeb research with mandatory sources

The situation

Management wants an overview of new regulations in your industry. The answer sounds confident, but you cannot see which sentence comes from where.

The cut

After

Goal: Research on the web: [Question, e.g. your research question, without names or internal figures]

Source: Only sources you name with a link. Prefer [Source type, e.g. government websites and vendor documentation].

Expectations:
1. An answer in no more than eight sentences. After each sentence, put the link it comes from.
2. A list “Not supported” with everything you suspect but cannot back up with a source.
3. For each source, the date of the page if given, otherwise “no date”.
If sources contradict each other, show the contradiction instead of resolving it.

No add-on license, in Microsoft Copilot Chat with web search. Without a copy button: select the text and copy it with Ctrl+C.

How to use it

1. Phrase the question so that it contains no customer names and no internal figures.
2. Fill in the source type and send.
3. Open three links and check whether the page really supports the sentence.
4. Only pass on the “Not supported” list once you have clarified it yourself.

How to spot a good answer

• No more than eight sentences, each with a link.
• A separate “Not supported” list.
• A date or “no date” for each source.
• Contradictions between sources made visible instead of smoothed over.

The check

Open three links per answer and count how often the source really supports the sentence. That rate is your measure of trust.

Limits

• According to Microsoft, web search queries go to the Bing service and fall under separate data terms. They are not covered by the Data Protection Addendum. That is why customer names and internal figures do not belong in the research question.
• Admins can turn off web search. According to Microsoft, Microsoft Copilot Chat then answers only from the language model, and links are missing.
• A link is not evidence until you have read the page.
